What's an Ocean have to do with Leadership?

Updated: Feb 21, 2022

I am often asked, ‘Why the name Calm Ocean Coaching? What does it have to do with conscious leadership and business energy coaching?”. I agree, it doesn’t exactly brand itself to the business world. I think that is exactly why I like the name so much. It separates the world that most businesspeople live in, one of stress and limitations, from the possibility of living in a state of peace and expansiveness while experiencing one’s limitless potential.

I have my daughter, Audrey, who was 11 years old at the time, to thank for the name.

I had been planning my coaching business and was not sure what to name it. One morning, I got up extra early to meditate on the name. It was not a good session.

My mind was overly engaged, and I had a hard time quieting it. The names that were coming to me did not capture the essence of the service I would bring to my clients.

They were boring, along the lines of “Shift and Succeed” or “Release and Transform”. They felt forced and masculine, whereas the work I do comes with ease, effortlessness, and collaboration; powerful feminine traits. (Like a calm ocean.)

I quickly finished my meditation in frustration and went upstairs to my bedroom to get ready for work. At the time, we were living right next to the beach. My bedroom overlooked a row of houses, the sand and the expansive Pacific Ocean.

In the mornings, I was often met with the most beautiful and inspirational views. As the sun would rise from the east, it would paint the western sky the most beautiful shade of pinks and purples before blending into blues of the ocean.

This morning was no exception. As I looked at the view from the patio doors, I felt a deep sense of peace and awe for the powerful vision in front of me. I knew in that moment that this was the feeling that I wanted the name of my coaching business to evoke. I asked the Universe to please bring me a name that reflects this powerful feeling. I didn’t have long to wait.

I had to drop off Audrey at her Dad’s on my way to work. She is a very intuitive, connected spirit so I asked her if I could run past her the names I had come up with during my morning meditation. She excitedly said yes and turned towards me expectantly.

As I rattled off the ideas, her excitement began to fade, and I saw her nose crinkle at more than one option. Not wanting to hurt my feelings, she diplomatically said they were ok as she turned to look out the car window towards the ocean that ran parallel to the road.

In seconds, Audrey turned back to me and said, "What about calling it Calm Ocean Coaching?" This immediately got my attention and I leaned towards her, asking her what was the meaning behind the name.

She compared the ocean to feelings of anxiety. When you feel good, you are like the calm waves that come on a beautiful day, she said. But as you get anxious, you become like the waves that build from the force of a storm; you get rickety and unpredictable. You don’t feel as good as you do when you are calm, and you don’t perform as well in life.

I felt deep within that she was on to something and I had her use my phone to google the domain name Sure enough, it was available, and I knew the name was my gift from the Universe. In less than an hour, it had answered my ask for the name of my company! As soon as I parked in my office's parking garage, I went online and purchased the domain.

I am so grateful Audrey gave me the name that depicts the state that I want to live in at all times and that which I want to help my clients achieve. Think about it. A calm ocean is entirely peaceful yet so powerful.

Look at all the creations above and below the water that thrive under its strong, steady pulse. There is something so magical about this magnificent body of water, so much treasure buried beneath the surface.

Like the ocean, we are also magnificent beings and our true power lies hidden within.

Leaders are like the ocean. When we are steady and calm, we can create so many remarkable outcomes for our companies, our customers, our employees, and our families. When we feel turbulent on the inside, it is reflected in the less than desirable results we create in our workplace and in our personal lives.
